Kynren

What Can You Expect from a Night at Kynren When Staying at Weardale Lodges?

If you’re planning a stay at Weardale Lodges during the summer, there’s one local event that often gets guests asking:

“Is Kynren worth seeing while we’re in the area?” The answer is an absolute yes, especially if you’re looking for a unique, historical experience that you’ll remember about for years to come.

Let’s take a look at what Kynren is, why it’s so popular, and how you can make the most of your evening there during your stay.

What exactly is Kynren?

Kynren is a spectacular open-air live-action show held in Bishop Auckland, just under an hour’s drive from Weardale Lodges. Set against the backdrop of Auckland Castle, it tells the 2,000-year story of England through dazzling performances, dramatic effects, music, and fireworks,  all packed into a 90 minute show.

Think of it as a cinematic experience brought to life on stage, complete with horses, live battle scenes, Viking longships, and even a glimpse of Queen Elizabeth I. It’s staged by a 1,000-strong volunteer cast and crew, making it one of the UK’s most impressive community-led productions.

When Does Kynren Take Place?

Kynren runs on selected weekends during the summer, usually from late June to early September. The show starts at sunset to maximise the effect, so times can vary throughout the season.

We always recommend checking the official Kynren website for the current schedule and booking in advance, as performances can and do sell out, especially in peak holiday periods.

How Far is Kynren from Weardale Lodges?

Kynren is held in Bishop Auckland, around a 50-minute drive from Weardale Lodges. It’s a straightforward route, mostly along the A689 and A688, with plenty of parking available on-site.

We suggest planning to arrive early, as the venue opens several hours before the performance begins. There are food outlets, bars, and roaming performers to enjoy while you wait.

What Should You Bring?

  • Warm Layers: Even in summer, it can get cool in the evening.
  • Waterproofs: The show will go ahead in all weather so come prepared.
  • Cushions or a Blanket: While the seating is tiered and offers good views, a bit of extra comfort never hurts.
  • Camera: You can take photos before and after the performance, but photography isn’t allowed during the show itself.

Where Can I Eat Beforehand?

While there are food and drink options at the venue, many visitors like to make an evening of it and enjoy a meal in Bishop Auckland beforehand. There’s a great range of pubs, restaurants and cafes to suit different tastes and dietary needs. If you’re travelling from Weardale Lodges, consider stopping for a dinner before heading to the show.

Why Kynren is a Must-See

  • It’s unlike anything else in the UK. Few events offer this scale of production in such a beautiful countryside setting.
  • It’s run by the local community. The passion and energy of the volunteers shine through in every scene.
  • It’s educational and inspiring. You’ll leave with a renewed appreciation for British history and the people who’ve helped shape it.
