High Force & Low Force Walks

Walking at High Force & Low Force Waterfalls What You Need to Know Before You Go

If you’re staying at Weardale Lodges and fancy stretching your legs with something unforgettable, you might be wondering:

“Is the High Force and Low Force walk worth doing during my stay?”
The answer? Absolutely, and here’s everything you need to know before you go.

Where Are High Force and Low Force?

Both waterfalls are located along the River Tees, just a scenic drive from your lodge. They sit within the North Pennines National Landscape, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), and offer some of the best views in the area, which is around 30 to 40 minutes by car.

What’s the Difference Between the Two?

  • High Force is the real showstopper, one of England’s most powerful waterfalls, plunging 21 metres over a dramatic cliff face.
  • Low Force is smaller but equally beautiful, with cascades flowing over ancient Whin Sill rock and a lovely bridge crossing nearby.

Top tip: The walk between them is just as special as the falls themselves.

How Long Is the Walk Between Them?

The route between Low Force and High Force is about 4.5 miles return if you walk from Bowlees Visitor Centre. It’s a well-marked trail along the riverbank, mostly flat with a few moderate sections, ideal for a half-day adventure.

Can You Just Visit One?

Yes! If you’re short on time, you can visit either waterfall on its own:

  • For Low Force, park near Bowlees Visitor Centre (which has toilets and a cafe).
  • For High Force, there’s dedicated parking and a short, paid-access path directly to the viewpoint.

What Should I Wear or Bring?

  • Good walking shoes or boots (especially if it’s been raining)
  • A waterproof or windproof jacket (this is the North, after all)
  • A bottle of water and a snack
  • Your camera  you’ll want to capture it

When’s the Best Time to Visit?

Spring and early summer are ideal, wildflowers bloom along the trail, and the rivers run full. Autumn also offers incredible colours.

Try to go early in the day or midweek if you want a quieter experience.
